It is not keeping the girls out of the surf or the beachgoers escaping the 100°plus heat in the valley. Weekends are a zoo in Morro Bay, only about 10% wear a mask and forget social distancing.

Conditions this time of year… wind, waves and weather were excellent at Morro Rock. Coalition teams from San Diego to San Francisco. One hundred and twenty plus entrants competed for trophies and bragging rights. EBWOW was on hand shooting photos from dawn to dusk. The trophy board we give away for the highest scoring woman was a close battle between Jen Smith of “Wind and Sea” and Adi Mahan of “Morro Bay Surf Club.”
Jen took the win with forty two points, Adi with thirty nine points. The two have been friends for some time and in a heart-felt gesture, Jen gave the board to Adi, saying the she thought it should stay in Morro Bay.
“What a Gal.”
“What a friendship.”

The surfing season with its decent swells and less summer fog is still a couple months away. However, I did photograph the Santa Cruz Longboard event on Memorial Weekend and it was great!
Last weekend, I attended a paddle-out for a young surfer girl who I have known and photographed for the last five years. It was a devastating loss for her parents and friends so full of life and only 26 years old. She appeared many times in previous postings. I will truly miss her. I will see you in the surf Sydney Rudy. Rest in peace.

Item: I’ll put together a collection of my Santa Cruz Longboard photos in the next post.
I just want to make you all aware of the Big, Bad and Ugly, our local Morro Bay Surf Invitational, February 16-17, 2019. Estero Bay Women on Water will be giving away another custom made longboard to the girl with the highest scoring three wave ride in any female longboard event. The score can be from a heat, semi or final. This year scoring is twenty points a wave to make fewer tie scores. The trophy board is a 9′ 2″ x 22 1/2″ x 3″ shaped by Shane Stoneman. It includes leash, fin, heavy duty “Stay Covered” bag, which is a $1,253 value. It will be on display at Pizza Port, Morro Bay, CA.
Item: With a shortage of girl photos in this issue, I have posted a few “tube rides” that we all enjoy.

Spring suits in November?
“Well, with 79 degree weather and water temps up a little…”
“What the hell! Put it on! No body is going to take a picture this far away. Besides, I like my legs.”
Below are some locals and a few from SoCal. Also, I included some shots from the Libertine Brewing Halloween Contest, which was mostly men (one of the few occasions you will see men on your site).

If you have been wondering why there have been no recent postings on EBWOW, it is because my surf photography starts in the fall and runs through mid-spring. Late spring and summer, I monitor and photograph the peregrine falcons at Morro Rock.
With the first rainstorm of autumn, the surf has picked up. Yesterday in the late afternoon, there were eighty plus surfers in the waves off Morro Rock. This tells you the season is beginning. The following photos below are from the last few weeks.

The 28th Annual Big, Bad & Ugly surfing event is coming up next month, February 17-18, 2018.
“Estero Bay Women On Water” has commissioned Joe’s Surfboards for a first place trophy long board. See below:
I wanted it so any girl or woman of any age has a chance to win it. Winner will be determined by highest scoring Session of the Meet, (two wave) in either a heat, quarter, semi or final. Only females riding 8′ or longer traditional surfboard, no foils, wings or gadgets. You must beat the previous high score. There will be no tie scores.
The board comes with a Stay Covered Bag, three fins, three cakes of wax. The board is on display at Pizza Port Restaurant, 787 Main St., Morro Bay CA 93442.
We would love for you to compete. Calling a local gals, 8 to 80!

P.S. Trophy Board description:
Length: 9’3″
Width: 22 1/2″
Thickness: 3″
Rails: 60/40
Fins: 3 boxes
Color: Main Body-carmelized peach, Spoon-crushed nutmeg
Board inscription: “First Place Women’s Longboard Division Presented By Estero Bay Women On Water”
These are photos through to December 30th. I wish I had more, but its hard to find girls that like big waves or cold days or no sun or no waves, so I am at their mercy.
On another subject, the Big, Bad & Ugly surf contest hosted by Estero Bay Surf Club in February on Presidents’ Holiday will have many events for men, women, groms, etc. EBWOW will sponsor the Women’s Long Board Event with a trophy 9′ 3″ High Performance Nose Rider Board from Joe’s Surf Shop. Highest scoring run of the Meet (2 wave average) by a female of any age riding a surf board 8 feet in length or longer will take it home. The board will be on display at Pizza Port, Morro Bay, CA around the first or second week of January 2018.

Mostly small summer surf, some fog. Not a lot of out-of-towners yet, next couple of months should start to see more action. Enjoy yourself in these photos.
