Mornings are best May 1

Wind, white caps and 47 degree water means its spring time. At 8:00 AM, there were 20 surfers in the waves at Morro Rock, by 9:15 there were 2 surfers. Wind has been the main factor. Not all days are bad, just this weekend we had the Kite Festival. Many of the larger kites did not have enough wind to fly until 1:00 PM. There have been many days this past month and a half where I never took a shot, sometimes never getting out of my truck. On the the better days, I did get some of you girls and one “grom.

A break in the rains

img_7733

Sydney

A couple of warm days and we have women surfers in the water. The rains have slowed a bit, but so has the surf, mostly 3 to 4 feet with occasional sets to 6 plus feet. Some of the girls in this issue, I have not seen for months, others you see frequently. Most of the photos are not very dramatic, but then again they are not all world class surfers, but they have a great time and love to see their photos. High vertical snap turns, cross top floaters and rail carving bottom turns can be seen here. You do them, I’ll shoot them.

‘Til then… Keep a leash on it Bob

P.S. No word on Big, Bad & Ugly.

Big, Bad & Ugly

I just received a this TEXT as soon as I posted the last story this morning:

“Due to unfavorable and unsafe conditions, we have canceled the BIG, BAD & UGLY. We will work on rescheduling if the forecasting models turn around soon, and we’ll keep everyone informed…..”

I’m as disappointed as you are, but we want you to be safe, have a good time and good turn out.

High winds, high surf, heavy rain.

Everything that keeps all but the most hardy from surfing.

By the end of January things started to clean up. I was able to get a few shots, just enough to keep the ones that did surf happy. I hope by the surfing contest, February 18/19, we will have good conditions for the “BIG, BAD, AND UGLY” that has been revived for this year.

Estero Bay Women on Water has donated $100 gift certificates to winners in “Women’s Long Board,” “Women’s Short Board,” and “Junior Women”.

Winter is coming

With fall about to end and winter coming on, we don’t have as many visiting surfers until the the big winter swells start to appear.  However, many of the locals still give me a chance to let me show them what they look like on a wave. Some are seasoned surfers, many are not, others just beginners, but just remember you don’t have to surf like Tyler Wright to appear here.

Halloween and beyond

The fall months on the Central Coast have been gorgeous. The surf has been big, then medium, then back to big, but very few days of small to no surf.

The photos you see here are from Cayucos and the north side of Morro Rock. Some of the surfer girls in the photos I don’t know. If you recognize someone, tell them you saw their photo on this website.

Little surf, a lot of sun

Late September and early October turned out to be great weather!  Not quite “Indian summer,” but beautiful. The water is still 54-56°, with an occasional spike to nearly 60°, but only for a day or two.  3-4mm wet suits are still the norm.  Only the most hardy wear less.  A few new faces this issue and some you have seen before.img_7074IMG_7064.jpgIMG_7059.jpgIMG_7052.jpgIMG_7049.jpgIMG_6994.jpgIMG_6991.jpgIMG_6975.jpgIMG_6959.jpgIMG_6958.jpgIMG_6952.jpgIMG_6951.jpgIMG_6947.jpgIMG_6944.jpgIMG_6929.jpgIMG_6928.jpgIMG_6921.jpgIMG_6906.jpgIMG_6902.jpgIMG_6899.jpg

The summer that never was

I think it was sometime in July that I saw the last sunny morning. Maybe this marine layer will give way to an “Indian summer.” We can always hope.

However, nothing stops a surfer from getting wet. Now for me… I gripe because of the lighting for the photos that I take of you.  I like a sunlit smile in a breaking wave. Here are some with sun and some with smiles from late August through September.

No swell summer

We still have a small south swell and surfers that will brave the 52 – 54 degree water of Estero Bay. IMG_6744Summer fog makes for poor photography most of the time,IMG_6719but we do get a brake once in a while when the sun pokes through.IMG_6654 (1).jpgA few new faces and some you have seen before.IMG_6697.jpgIt’s now August and I am not sure we will ever see a “spring suit.”IMG_6692.jpg

Double over ankle

If it’s not foggy or windy it’s set waves that are “double over ankle”. But things can only improve. What the hell, it’s summer. IMG_6536
